Sheep infected with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent were found to display the same clinical signs seen in classical scrapie disease, although intense itching and scratching symptoms manifested earlier in the course of BSE infection.

Milk from scrapie-affected ewes is capable of transmitting the infectious prion protein to unaffected, genetically susceptible lambs, although it remains to be determined whether the lambs then develop scrapie disease symptoms.
