Synopsis and meta-analysis of genetic association studies in osteoporosis for the focal adhesion family genes: the CUMAGAS-OSTEOporosis information system

Elias Zintzaras, Chrysoula Doxani, Theocharis Koufakis, Alkibiadis Kastanis, Paraskevi Rodopoulou, Theofilos Karachalios BMC Medicine 2011, 9:9 (26 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

A new web-based system of ongoing meta-analyses provides new evidence to implicate focal adhesion genes in osteoporosis, by synthesizing data from underpowered genetic association studies.

Treatment of myofascial trigger points in patients with chronic shoulder pain: a randomized, controlled trial

Carel Bron, Arthur de Gast, Jan Dommerholt, Boudewijn Stegenga, Michel Wensing, Rob AB Oostendorp BMC Medicine 2011, 9:8 (24 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Treatment of ‘trigger points’ in shoulder muscles significantly reduces symptoms and improves shoulder function for patients with chronic non-traumatic shoulder pain, as part of a physical therapy treatment program.

Variability of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease key epidemiological data in Europe: systematic review

Kokuvi Atsou, Christos Chouaid, Gilles Hejblum BMC Medicine 2011, 9:7 (18 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Epidemiological characteristics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as the methods used to estimate them vary widely across European countries, so standardizing data collection should be enhanced for improved decision-making on preventive measures and patient management

Expenditures for the care of HIV-infected patients in rural areas in China's antiretroviral therapy programs

Feng Zhou, Gerald F Kominski, Han-Zhu Qian, Jiansheng Wang, Song Duan, Zhiwei Guo, Xinping Zhao BMC Medicine 2011, 9:6 (17 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Initiating anti-retroviral treatment earlier in HIV-infected individuals in China’s healthcare system would reduce the associated costs of adverse drug reactions and opportunistic infections, although it would likely increase treatment costs over the long-term.

Perceived morbidity and community burden after a Chikungunya outbreak: the TELECHIK survey, a population-based cohort study

Patrick Gérardin, Adrian Fianu, Denis Malvy, Corinne Mussard, Karim Boussaïd, Olivier Rollot, Alain Michault, Bernard-Alex Gaüzere, Gérard Bréart, François Favier BMC Medicine 2011, 9:5 (14 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne pathogen that caused a recent outbreak in La Réunion, also has long-term health consequences including prolonged or late-onset rheumatologic and neurological side-effects, further burdening an already vulnerable community.

Blood lipid profiles and peripheral blood mononuclear cell cholesterol metabolism gene expression in patients with and without methotrexate treatment

Der-Yuan Chen, Hui-Min Chih, Joung-Liang Lan, Hsin-Yueh Chang, Wei-Wen Chen, En-Pei Chiang BMC Medicine 2011, 9:4 (13 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Low doses of methotrexate, a commonly prescribed drug for rheumatoid arthritis, affects cholesterol metabolism at the mRNA level by increasing the expression of cholesterol efflux genes.

Tailored antiplatelet therapy can overcome clopidogrel and aspirin resistance - The BOchum CLopidogrel and Aspirin Plan (BOCLA-Plan) to improve antiplatelet therapy

Horst Neubauer, Andreas FC Kaiser, Heinz G Endres, Jan C Krüger, Andreas Engelhardt, Sebastian Lask, Fenena Pepinghege, Andreas Kusber, Andreas Mügge BMC Medicine 2011, 9:3 (12 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

A clinical trial suggests that clopidogrel and aspirin treatment for anti-platelet therapy after coronary stenting is more effective when tailored to the patient, including testing for predictive risk factors such as dual resistance.

Differential endothelial cell gene expression by African Americans versus Caucasian Americans: a possible contribution to health disparity in vascular disease and cancer

P Wei, LC Milbauer, J Enenstein, J Nguyen, W Pan, RP Hebbel BMC Medicine 2011, 9:2 (11 January 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Differences in blood vessel gene expression patterns between African-Americans and Caucasian-Americans, potentially derived from ancestral continent-of-origin genetic influences, may contribute to the disparity in vascular-related disease risks seen in these two groups, including stroke and some cancers.
