Arterial endothelial cells lacking the murine Dll4 gene
In mice, Notch ligand Delta-like 4 (Dll4) null embryos die between 8.5-9.5 days post coitum due to a severely reduced dorsal aorta. A transverse section of the dorsal aorta from Dll4-/- embryos with 11 somites show that endothelial cells (red) are more aggregated, do not acquire a spindle shape, and have a defective basement membrane (green). Endothelial cells were stained for the marker PECAM-1; and the basement membrane for fibronectin, with overlap of signal in yellow. Nuclei (blue) were stained with DAPI.
