BioMed Central publishes open access journal dedicated to global health

Global Health Research and Policy, an open access, multidisciplinary, and peer-reviewed journal which aims to improve regional and global health and promote health equity by disseminating high quality research is launched today by BioMed Central in partnership with the Global Health Institute (GHI) at Wuhan University.

Xinguang Chen, MD, PhD, Executive Editor-in-Chief of the new journal said: “Global Health Research and Policy is a timely addition to the literature, providing a platform for researchers, professors and graduate students to exchange their ideas and research findings, and update their knowledge on global health science and policy, at a time when global health as a branch of science is still in its early stages and is expected to grow rapidly.”

Global Health Research and Policy welcomes submissions of articles focusing on health equity, health systems and policy, global health practice and education, social determinants of health, behavior and health, health promotion, human resources in health, disease burden, environmental health, mental health, maternal and child health, aging and health care, health ethics, as well as other urgent and neglected global health issues.

Xinguang Chen said: “We stick to the broadest definition of global health to encompass any research that is guided by a global perspective or can help others tackle medical and health issues with a global perspective.”

Dr. Chen is a Professor with tenure at the College of Public Health & Health Professions and the College of Medicine, University of Florida, and Luojia Scholar Chair Professor at Wuhan University. His research interests mainly focus on behavior and health, global health and advanced modeling analysis.

The article processing charges (APCs) for the journal will be covered by the GHI of Wuhan University. Youmei Feng, MD, Editor-in-Chief, said: “One of the main reasons why the GHI decided to launch the journal and to provide funds to support the initiative is that, in addition to the general interest, we consider our journal as a flagship for the GHI of Wuhan University, providing opportunities for faculty and students to connect with their peers across the globe.” Dr. Feng is a Professor at Wuhan University with a research focus on maternal and child health, nutrition and health policy.

Dr. Chen explained the vision of the journal: “It is our goal and expectation that the collection of articles published in this journal will be a valuable source for both readers and researchers, helping to promote the development of global health into a vibrant branch of health science. BioMed Central’s reputation in the field, the access it provides to a broad range of researchers and readers, are factors we consider essential to achieving this goal.”

Ruth King, Editorial Director, Health Sciences at BioMed Central, said: “BioMed Central is thrilled to be working together with the Global Health Institute of Wuhan University in China to publish Global Health Research and Policy. We share their mission to advance Global Health research through open access publication and believe that the journal will become an international platform for knowledge exchange.”
