GFP-positive cells are first observed around the 14 somite stage as bilateral patches in insulin:GFP transgenic embryos. These cells divide and actively migrate to the posterior. The net movement towards the midline is an indirect result of convergent-extension since active migration towards the midline is not observed. By the 24 hpf stage, GFP-positive cells are coalesced into a single islet in the posterior and midline relative to the starting position.
