Time course of delta neutrophil index (DNI) values, white blood cell (WBC) counts, and absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) before and after the onset of severe sepsis/septic shock. On the basis of the optimal cut-off values (DNI, 6.5%; WBC, 16590/mm3; and ANC, 14100/mm3) presented in Table 3, DNI values already elevated before the onset of organ/circulatory failure in 36 (82%) of the 44 patients with severe sepsis/septic shock, and decreased over time after ICU admission (p < 0.001). In contrast, there were no changes in WBC counts (p =0.235) or ANC (p = 0.223) over time.
