The effect of auxin on cell expansion. Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) was injected at different concentrations (10-7 M, 10-5 M and 5.10-5 M) through the calyx of 'Royal Gala' apples 30 days after full bloom. Two weeks following
injection, diameter increase was measured (A), Cryo-Scanning Electron Microscopy photographs
of five representative fruits were taken (scale bar: 100 μm) (B), average cell area
was calculated (C) and the percentage of abscised fruit was determined (D). Fifty
fruit were injected per concentration. Error bars represent standard error of the
mean.
