Biophysical model of an axon. A. A single Burgers element with a free spring (k1); a spring (k2) and dashpot (H) in parallel; and a free Growth dashpot (G). B. Under constant tension (F0) the behavior of each Burgers element is dominated by its free dashpot, thus we treat the axon as a series of dashpots (G). Attachments to the substrate are represented as friction dashpots (η). C. Tension applied or generated in the growth cone (F0) is dissipated by interactions with the substrate along the axon.
