Statins preferentially decrease chemokine production in the lungs without reducing proinflammatory mediators during early pneumococcal pneumonia. Control, Low, and High statin mice were challenged intratracheally with 1 X 105 cfu and sacrificed 24 h after infection. Collected A) bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and B) serum were assayed for pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine production by a mouse inflammatory cytometric bead array or ELISA (n = 12/group). No statistically significant differences in cytokine production were observed, while the chemokines MCP-1 and KC were significantly decreased in mice receiving the high statin diet compared to control. Data are presented as the mean ± SEM. Statistics were determined by a two-tailed student’s t-test. P < 0.05 was considered significant in comparison to Control fed mice.
