*Strain IL1403 does not produce diacetyl as it was cured of plasmids [38]. However, the parental strain CNRZ157 (IL594) was identified as biovar. diacetylactis, since it produces 7.4 mg/l of diacetyl (Tremblay J, Tailliez P, unpublished). Therefore we consider IL1403 as biovar. diacetylactis.** These strains exhibit ssp. lactis phenotype (Tremblay J, Tailliez P, unpublished).
