Conservation of a cluster of 12 genes located around the origin of replication in several α-proteobacteria: (1) Azorhizobium caulinodans, (2) Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Rhizobium leguminosarum, and Rhizobium etli, (3) Mesorhizobium loti, Brucella abortus, and Brucella suis, (4) Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Rhodopseudomonas palustris, (5) Caulobacter crescentus, and (6) Xanthobacter autotrophicus. The putative proteins and the origin of replication are indicated. B. Cumulative distribution in forward and reverse orientation of the 8-base KOPS motif 5'-GGGNAGGG-3' in the genome of A. caulinodans. The orientation of this motif is strongly biased toward dif sites at the terminus of replication (Terminus).
