Each of these substrates is converted to acetaldehyde, which is either oxidized to acetyl-CoA to yield energy by substrate-level phosphorylation or reduced to ethanol to dispose of NADH or oxidized to acetate to supply doubly reduced ferredoxin (Fd2e).
