All 37 E. coli genotypes used in this study are listed in the matrix. The wild-type strain is denoted w, the single mutants are denoted by the letters a, b, c, r, s, t, x, y, z, and the double mutants by pairs of these letters. Owing to the symmetry of the matrix, all genotypes different from the wild-type are shown twice. Genotypes along the diagonal do not exist. The other empty cells, such as ab, correspond to double mutants that are missing owing to the specific experimental design; no triple mutants were constructed in this experiment.
