The x axis shows the competitive cost (the value of γ) for a given simulation, and the y axis shows the necessary preference strength to be able to evolve female preferences (α). As the competitive cost increases, higher preference strengths are necessary to fix female preferences. The black line is the preference strength needed for simulations with a single preference, the grey line is the preference strength required in simulations with two preferences (both introduced at low initial frequencies).
