Nicotine inhibits the oxidative burst in HL-60 cells. Compared to DMSO-only control cells, the mean oxidative burst (formazan deposition following PMA stimulation) mounted by nicotine-exposed five-day, DMSO-differentiated HL-60 cells was reduced by as much as 48% (n = 12, ¶¶ p < 0.001 compared to DMSO-only control cells).
