A "hypothetical relationship" is defined when two terms have no documented relationship, but share connections to the same tertiary node(s). To test the value of these relationships in predicting the findings of future research, 22 terms (i.e., term 2; see methods) known to be involved in long-term potentiation (LTP) (i.e. term 1) were queried by Chilibot, limiting the latest references analyzed to the years 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2004. The "hypothetical relationships" (i.e. term 1 is related to term 2) and the time periods when these hypothetical relationships were suggested and documented are listed. The original results of these searches including links to the PubMed abstracts are available [see additional file 5].
