University of North Carolina at Greensboro shows support for open access

27 Apr 2010

BioMed Central today announced that the University of North Carolina at Greensboro has become its newest institutional member.

Founded in 1891, UNCG is one of the original universities in the North Carolina system of higher education. It now serves nearly 20,000 students on campus and through a variety of distance learning programs, with an emphasis on both teaching and research. The university hosts a number of research centers including the Center for Biotechnology, Genomics and Health Research, the Center for Health of Vulnerable Populations, and the Center for Research Excellence in the Nanobiosciences. In 2007, the Faculty Senate formed the Committee for Scholarly Communications to support the development of new initiatives, including the development of more open access publishing by university authors.

Under the auspices of the University Libraries, the university has established a supporter membership for an initial period of three years. “As a pioneer in open access publishing, BioMed Central is a great fit for UNCG’s scholarly communications objectives,” says Rosann Bazirjian, Dean of University Libraries. “By becoming an institutional member of BioMed Central we can express our support for open access publishing in a way that produces tangible benefits for our faculty and researchers.”

Bob Schatz, North American Sales Manager for BioMed Central commented: “One of our missions is to provide a meaningful publishing outlet for research being done at universities the size of UNCG. Having the university become an institutional member helps us carry that message to other similarly-sized institutions. We see this as a great opportunity for both our organizations.”
