Bioadhesives

Guest Editors:
Paula Ferreira: i2a Applied Research Institute, Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Portugal
Zhenwei Ma: University of British Columbia, Canada

BMC Biomedical Engineering welcomed submissions to our Collection on bioadhesives. Bioadhesives are commonly employed as alternatives to suturing, among other things. Their uses are varied and range from hemostats and tissue sealants to wound dressing. They can also be helpful in stabilizing implants or as drug dosage aids.

This Collection welcomed submissions that describe the development or new applications of, or major advances in the field of bioadhesives to be used in clinical settings.

Paula Ferreira: Applied Research Institute, Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Portugal

Paula Ferreira is a biochemist with a PhD in Chemical Engineering, an integrated member of CERNAS (Research Centre for Natural Resources, Environment and Society), and a researcher of the Applied Research Institute (i2a) – Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC), Portugal. She has been working in the area of development and functionalization of polymeric materials designed for biomedical applications, namely in the bioadhesives’ field. She is also an entrepreneur, being a co-founder of two spin-offs: one of University of Coimbra (UC) and another of IPC/UC.

Zhenwei Ma: University of British Columbia, Canada

Dr Zhenwei Ma is an early-career scientist interested in engineering biomaterials and biointerfaces for better human health. He has obtained extensive and diverse trainings in mechanical, chemical and biomedical engineering at McGill University, Harvard University, and University of British Columbia. His research has been highly interdisciplinary in nature, with promising impacts in various branches of engineering and medicine. He is a recipient of the Alan Gent Disinguished Student Paper Award from the Adhesion Society, and the Graduate Student Silver Award from the Materials Research Society.

About the collection

BMC Biomedical Engineering is calling for submissions to our Collection on bioadhesives. Bioadhesives are commonly employed as alternatives to suturing, among other things. Their uses are varied and range from hemostats and tissue sealants to wound dressing. They can also be helpful in stabilizing implants or as drug dosage aids.

Bioadhesives can be of biological or synthetic origin, and among their advantages are biocompatibility and biodegradability. In addition, many aid wound healing by releasing antimicrobial compounds to prevent infection.

This Collection welcomes submissions that describe the development or new applications of, or major advances in the field of bioadhesives to be used in clinical settings.
