BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is calling for submissions to our Collection on Safety and complications of cesarean birth in resource-limited settings.

Although overuse of cesarean birth is a serious global health concern, its underuse can endanger the health of mothers and babies, as access to safe surgical birth is crucial for favorable maternal and neonatal outcomes. Despite the need for the option of cesarean birth, it is not always safe or available in resource-limited settings, where skilled providers, equipment, and facilities may be limited.

Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, United Kingdom

Dr Aduragbemi Banke-Thomas is a physician and public health and health policy researcher. Presently, he is Associate Professor of Maternal and Newborn Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom and Health Systems Research Lead at the Maternal Reproductive Health Research Collective, Nigeria. He is also Visiting Professor on the Erasmus Mundus Europubhealth programme, Visiting Research Fellow at the LSE Health, London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom and Principal Researcher at the Senghor Chair in Health and Development in sub-Saharan Africa, University of Ottawa, Canada. He is an editorial board member of PLOS Global Public Health, Reproductive Health, and BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth.

Thomas van den Akker: Leiden University Medical Center and Vrije Universiteit University, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Thomas van den Akker is an obstetrician-gynecologist specialized in maternal-fetal medicine with a passionate clinical and research interest on the maternal side of the pregnancy. He has practiced in Malawi and the Netherlands. As professor of global maternal health, Thomas’s research network combines researchers from Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the globe at large, with an aim to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights of women worldwide. His research aims to study and promote safe and respectful labor practices, reduce unnecessary cesarean sections and improve care for severe maternal complications.

BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is calling for submissions to our Collection on Safety and complications of cesarean birth in resource-limited settings.

BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is pleased to announce the launch of a new Collection titled ‘Safety and complications of cesarean birth in resource-limited settings’ to bring together the latest research on this important topic. The Collection welcomes quantitative and qualitative research from around the globe from a wide range of disciplines including obstetrics, surgery, neonatology, epidemiology, and public health. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, prevalence and trends of cesarean birth and its complications in resource limited-settings, maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with cesarean birth in these settings, barriers to safe cesarean birth, and strategies for improving the safety of cesarean birth in low-resource settings.

Improving access to safe cesarean birth in resource-limited settings is crucial for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3, targets 3.1 and 3.2.
