Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 31 October 2024

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Neglected tropical diseases. Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) present formidable global challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations who struggle with restricted access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. The complexity of NTD epidemiology and treatment, often linked to environmental conditions, can involve vector-borne transmission, animal reservoirs, and intricate life cycles, posing significant challenges to public health control efforts. This Collection invites contributions from the research community which focus on the complexities of NTDs to address the gaps in understanding and combating these health issues, while exploring innovative approaches to mitigate their impact on marginalized populations. The topics of interest include various aspects of NTDs but are not limited to: epidemiological studies, clinical research, socioeconomic analyses, public health and policy initiatives, research advancing the understanding of NTD biology and pathogenesis, as well as the utilization of AI in their management.

New Content ItemThis Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

Dr Rodrigo Feliciano do Carmo is professor at the College of Medicine of the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (UNIVASF). He carried out part of his PhD at the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases of INSERM U906 (Aix-Marseille Université, France) and is currently head of the Research Group on Infectious and Neglected Diseases (GPDIN) and of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases at UNIVASF. He has experience in immunology and molecular biology and has worked mainly on the following topics: epidemiology, single nucleotide polymorphisms, biomarkers, innate immunity, real-time PCR, next generation sequencing, artificial intelligence, infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, leprosy, leishmaniasis, arboviruses, viral hepatitis and COVID-19.

Wei Wang, MD, Jiangsu Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China

Dr Wei Wang is now an Associate Professor in Jiangsu Institute of Parasitic Diseases and part-time Associate Professor in Nanjing Medical University, China. His research interests focus on, but are not limited to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and neglected tropical diseases. He is on the editorial board of several international journals including Infectious Diseases of Poverty, BMC Public Health and BMC Infectious Diseases.

About the Collection

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) present formidable global challenges, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations who struggle with restricted access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. The World Health Organisation lists 20 diverse NTD conditions, including leishmaniasis, chikungunya, schistosomiasis and human African trypanosomiasis. These diseases often develop in impoverished settings, where attention from medical research is often insufficient, impeding the development of robust prevention and treatment strategies. The complexity of NTD epidemiology and treatment, often linked to environmental conditions, can involve vector-borne transmission, animal reservoirs, and intricate life cycles, posing significant challenges to public health control efforts. The burden of NTDs is particularly severe in communities with limited resources, intensifying health disparities and perpetuating a cycle of neglect and suffering, which results in severe health, social, and economic consequences for over a billion people.

This Collection invites contributions from the research community which focus on the complexities of NTDs to address the gaps in understanding and combating these health issues, while exploring innovative approaches to mitigate their impact on marginalized populations. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Epidemiological studies on the prevalence and distribution of NTDs
  • Clinical research on diagnostic and treatment modalities
  • Socioeconomic analyses exploring the impact on affected communities and mitigation strategies
  • Public health initiatives and policies for prevention and control
  • Research enhancing the understanding of the biology and pathogenesis of NTDs
  • AI in the management of NTDs

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. Contributions to this Collection are sought to produce innovative solutions, drive policy changes, and help alleviate the burden of NTDs on marginalized populations.
