BMC Nursing is calling for submissions to our collection, Nursing approaches to self-care, self-management, and adaptation to illness. This Collection seeks to gather innovative research on nursing approaches to self-care, self-management, and adaptation to chronic illness, encompassing patient education, empowerment, and wellness promotion. We invite researchers to contribute their work, exploring strategies and interventions that enhance patient well-being and improve the management of chronic conditions, ultimately advancing nursing practice and patient care.

Åsa Audulv, RN, PhD, Department of Nursing, Umeå University, Sweden

Dr Åsa Audulv has a background in nursing and is currently a faculty member at Umeå University in northern Sweden. She has also held academic positions at Dalhousie University in Canada and Mid Sweden University. Dr Audulv teaches both undergraduate nursing students and postgraduate programs within the medical faculty at Umeå University. Her research focuses on self-management, particularly self-management theory and decision-making. This includes studies on self-management among individuals with neurological conditions and older adults with multimorbidity. Additionally, she is involved in the development of self-management measures and interventions. Dr Audulv has a strong interest in qualitative research methods, with a particular focus on qualitative longitudinal research.

Francisco Miguel Correia Sampaio, RMN, MSc, PhD, Nursing School of Porto, Portugal

Dr Francisco Sampaio is a registered psychiatric and mental health nurse who currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the Nursing School of Porto and as a Doctorate Integrated Researcher at CINTESIS@RISE. He holds a Master’s degree in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, a PhD in Nursing Sciences, and has completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr Sampaio previously served as President of the Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Specialty Board of the Portuguese Order of Nurses (2020-2023) and is currently a member of the Northern Portugal Regional Coordination of Mental Health.

Clemente Neves Sousa, RN, MSc, PhD, Nursing School of Porto, Portugal

Dr Clemente Nouva Sousa is a Professor at the Porto School of Nursing, holding a PhD from the University of Porto and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil. He is a Principal Investigator at CINTESIS/RISE and an expert in vascular access, with additional training in ultrasound from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Dr Sousa serves as a Council Member of the Vascular Access Society (VAS) and is a member of the Kidney Health Professionals Working Group of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

BMC Nursing is calling for submissions to our collection, Nursing approaches to self-care, self-management, and adaptation to illness.

Nursing approaches to self-care, self-management, and adaptation to illness encompasses a broad spectrum of strategies and interventions aimed at promoting patient well-being and empowering individuals to manage chronic conditions. This includes patient education, coping strategies, health promotion, and disease management, all of which are integral to nursing practice in various healthcare settings.

It is important for us to continue advancing our collective understanding in this area to enhance the quality of care provided to individuals with chronic illnesses. Recent advances have highlighted the significance of patient empowerment and the role of nursing interventions in promoting self-care, self-management, and adaptation. Additionally, research has emphasized the importance of personalized approaches that consider the unique needs and circumstances of patients, leading to more effective and tailored interventions.

We invite submissions from all aspects of this field, including, but not limited to:

Personal strategies in chronic illness management
Nursing interventions for patient empowerment
Health promotion and wellness in nursing practice
Patient education and disease management
Coping strategies for individuals with chronic conditions
