BMC Medical Genomics is calling for submissions to our Collection on Genomics of underrepresented populations.

This Collection aims to provide insights into genetic diversity, population-specific genetic variants, and the impact of genetic factors on health outcomes. Focal research areas include comparative genomic analyses, genomic sequencing in ethnic minorities, and the impact of genetic factors on health disparities in under-represented populations.

New Content ItemThis Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

Sally N. Adebamowo, MBBS, MSc, ScD, FAHA, University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center & University of Maryland School of Medicine, USA

Dr Sally Adebamowo, MBBS, MSc, ScD, FAHA, is an accomplished researcher specializing in genetic epidemiology. She holds degrees from the University College Hospital, University of Ibadan, Nigeria; the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK; and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), USA. Dr Adebamowo completed postdoctoral training in nutrition/cardiovascular epidemiology at HSPH, and genomics at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). She joined the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2016, focusing on HPV and cervical cancer, and cardiometabolic disorders. Her research, supported by prestigious grants including from the American Cancer Society and NIH, addresses critical health issues.

Hoh Boon-Peng, PhD, International Medical University, Malaysia

Prof Boon-Peng is a Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Health Sciences in the International Medical University of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His research interests include population genetics, ancient genome analysis, evolutionary medicine, human phenomics, and genetics of complex diseases. Prof Boon-Peng is a member of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the International Society of Global Health. He was the recipient of the UCSI Top Researchers Award in 2016, and was named in the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians in Academic Achievement and Accomplishment during 2013.

Mohit Divakar, PhD, CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, India

Dr Mohit Divakar is a Senior Project Associate at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, India. His Doctoral research work was primarily focused on generating a comprehensive genomic resource on structural variants in Indian genomes. Dr Divakar also contributed to a plethora of genomic surveillance and epidemiological study on CoVID-19 in India. Further, he gained expertise in molecular diagnosis of rare genetic diseases. Dr Divakar's passion for research is mostly driven by the less addressed challenges and questions in Biology.

Kumarasamy Thangaraj, PhD, CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, India

Dr Thangaraj has been a population and medical geneticist at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India for the last three decades. During the period of 2020 - 2023, he directed the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad. He is an elected Fellow of all major science Academies in India. He is a recipient of JC Bose Fellowship, Sun Pharma Research Award in Medical Sciences, etc. He is an Associate Editor of Tropical Medicine and International Health, and Editorial Board member of BMC Medical GenomicsHuman Genetics, Clinical Genetics, and Mitochondrion.

About the Collection

BMC Medical Genomics is calling for submissions to our Collection on Genomics of underrepresented populations.

Many populations remain under-represented in genomic studies, as ethnic minorities, racial minorities, people of color, and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds often face barriers to participation in genomic research.

As a result, genomic data predominantly represent populations of European ancestry, leading to a lack of diversity and generalizability in genomic findings. Understanding the genetic architecture of under-represented populations is crucial for addressing health disparities and developing tailored healthcare interventions.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
