BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is calling for submissions to our Collection on Effects of maternal infection and inflammation on maternal-fetal outcomes.

This Collection aims to address the impacts of infection and inflammation in pregnant individuals on outcomes for the mother and baby. Infections during pregnancy can result in adverse outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal infections, impacting fetal development. Understanding the interactions between the maternal immune system and infectious agents is crucial for timely diagnosis, effective management, and prevention of complications, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Kazumichi Fujioka, MD, PhD, Department of Pediatrics, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan

Dr Fujioka graduated with a medical degree from Kobe University in 2004. He completed his internship at Hyogo Prefectural Awaji Hospital, followed by his pediatric residency at Kakogawa Municipal Hospital, and then his fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Kobe University Hospital and Kobe Children’s Hospital. Dr Fujioka also received basic research training with a focus on the pathophysiology of neonatal diseases, first as a Postgraduate student at Kobe University, and then as a Postdoctoral scholar in the Dept of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. During his fellowship at Stanford, his research focus was investigating the function of heme oxygenase, the rate-limiting enzyme in bilirubin production, and its contribution to neonatal diseases, specifically neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and sepsis, using animal models. Dr Fujioka currently serves as a Professor of Pediatrics at Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine as well as Chief of Neonatology at Kobe University Hospital.

Hakan Gölbaşı, MD, Bakircay University Cigli Training and Research Hospital, Türkiye

Dr Gölbaşı graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in Izmir, Türkiye in 2012. After working as an assistant doctor in Gynecology and Obstetrics for four years, he became a Gynecology and Obstetrics specialist in 2017. Afterward, he specialized in Perinatology for three years and became a Perinatology specialist in 2021. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor by the Turkish Interuniversity Board in 2023. He has a special interest in maternal and fetal diseases, prenatal diagnosis and treatment interventions, and prenatal diagnosis and treatment of placental invasion anomalies. He has published more than 50 research articles in this field. Dr Gölbaşı has been a member of the Editorial Board of BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth since 2023.


About the Collection

BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is calling for submissions to our Collection on the Effects of maternal infection and inflammation on maternal-fetal outcomes.

Infections during pregnancy can lead to adverse outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal infections, as well as negatively affecting the developing fetus. Activation of inflammatory responses during pregnancy can also negatively affect fetal development and pregnancy outcomes. Comprehensive knowledge in these areas is essential for the timely diagnosis of maternal infections and inflammation, effective management, and prevention of complications, thereby promoting the well-being of pregnant individuals and their infants. Furthermore, advancements in understanding the interactions between the maternal immune system and infectious agents contribute to the optimization of targeted interventions and personalized approaches, ultimately improving maternal and neonatal outcomes and informing public health strategies.

BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth is launching a new Collection, Effects of maternal infection and inflammation on maternal-fetal outcomes, which aims to address the impacts of infection and inflammation in pregnant individuals on outcomes for the mother and baby. We invite maternal-fetal medicine specialists, immunologists, epidemiologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, neonatologists, public health professionals and related disciplines to contribute original research articles on topics including but not limited to the clinical impacts of HIV, CMV, toxoplasmosis, chorioamnionitis, bacterial vaginosis, group B strep infection, urinary tract infections, chronic inflammation, and other types of infection and inflammation on maternal-fetal outcomes.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
