Tissue engineering is a fascinating research field that has an ultimate goal in tissue reconstruction and regeneration. Among the major areas of tissue engineering, engineered biomaterials are very critical in the role of providing cells with a perfect microenvironment for their growth and differentiation. Although there have been so many works, major limitations still persist: poor understanding of cell-biomaterials interaction, need of innovative biomaterials, and huge gap between 2D and 3D environments.
In this thematic series published by Biomaterials Research, diverse biomaterials are utilized for their applications in the area of tissue reconstruction, cell guidance, bioactive molecule delivery, and biomimetic coating. Such works are expected to bring more advanced engineered biomaterials for tissue engineering.
