BMC Medicine is calling for submissions to our Collection on biodefense and antimicrobial resistance that addresses the challenges posed by drug-resistant infections and biological threats. Biodefense encompasses strategies and measures to protect against biological threats, including deliberate attacks and naturally occurring outbreaks. Antimicrobial resistance, on the other hand, refers to the ability of microorganisms to withstand the effects of antimicrobial medications, posing a significant threat to public health. Understanding the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, the impact of inappropriate prescription practices, the development of novel antimicrobials, and the formation of biofilms are all crucial aspects of this field. This Collection aims to advance our understanding in the area of biodefense and antimicrobial resistance to address the growing threat of drug-resistant infections and potential bioterrorism events.

Wael A H Hegazy, PhD, Zagazig University, Egypt

Dr Hegazy is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology with extensive experience in studying bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and host-pathogen interactions. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of bacterial virulence and developing novel strategies to combat bacterial infections. Dr Hegazy has published about 70 articles in prestigious scientific journals. He is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and mentoring the next generation of researchers in the field of microbiology and immunology.

Bongyoung Kim, MD, PhD, Hanyang University College of Medicine, South Korea

Dr Kim is an Associate Professor at Hanyang University College of Medicine, specializing in Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases). He graduated from Hanyang University College of Medicine and earned his doctorate in Internal Medicine. His major clinical and research fields include antibiotic stewardship, multidrug-resistant bacteria, and urinary tract infections. He has published more than 90 papers in international journals. Dr Kim is actively involved in the Korean Society of Infectious Diseases and the Korean Society for Antimicrobial Therapy. In 2020, he was selected as an International Ambassador by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. He has also won several research awards.

Biodefense encompasses strategies and measures to protect against biological threats, including deliberate attacks and naturally occurring outbreaks. Antimicrobial resistance, on the other hand, refers to the ability of microorganisms to withstand the effects of antimicrobial medications, posing a significant threat to public health. Understanding the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, the impact of inappropriate prescription practices, the development of novel antimicrobials, and the formation of biofilms are all crucial aspects of this field.

It is important for us to continue advancing our collective understanding in the area of biodefense and antimicrobial resistance to address the growing threat of drug-resistant infections and potential bioterrorism events. Recent advances have included the identification of new antimicrobial compounds, the exploration of alternative treatment strategies, and the use of genomics to study antibiotic resistance mechanisms. These advances have provided valuable insights into combating antimicrobial resistance and enhancing biodefense capabilities.

We invite submissions that explore antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, novel treatment approaches, and strategies for enhancing biodefense capabilities, with the aim of informing evidence-based interventions to combat antimicrobial resistance and mitigate the risks associated with biological threats.
