Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 31 October 2024

BMC Neurology is calling for submissions to our Collection on pathophysiological and therapeutic advances in post-COVID syndrome. As we navigate the evolving landscape of neurology in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this Collection aims to shed light on the intricate interplay between neurological manifestations and the pathophysiology of
post-COVID syndrome.

New Content ItemThis Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.

Leonidas D. Panos, MD, University of Bern, Switzerland

Dr Leonidas D. Panos has been serving as a Consultant at the Bern University Hospital 'Inselspital' in Switzerland and as a Visiting Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Cyprus since January 2024. With an MD (Dr.med.) from the University of Bern, focusing on neurological manifestations of cardiac myxomas, and a medical degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, Dr Panos has garnered extensive experience. His experience includes pivotal roles in neurorehabilitation, stroke, headaches, neuroimmunology, and dementia. Dr Panos has contributed significantly to the field through his numerous publications, particularly on stroke and cerebral microbleeds. He is also an Editorial Board Member for BMC Neurology.

Valentino Rački, MD, PhD, Department of Neurology, University of Rijeka, Croatia
Valentino Rački, MD, PhD, is a research assistant at the Department of Neurology, Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka. Previous work experience includes a research assistant position at the Department of Physiology and Immunology, Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka. Scientific work is focused on neuroimmunology and neurogenetics, with prior publications in the area of genetics in movement disorders and microglia immunometabolic programming. He is also a part of the HERVCOV research project team with a focus on endogenous retrovirus envelopes in acute and post-COVID-19 patients.

About the Collection

BMC Neurology is now welcoming submissions to a new Collection on pathophysiology and therapeutic advances in post-COVID syndrome. The unprecedented global health crisis brought about by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has left a lasting impact on individuals, with a significant subset experiencing persistent neurological symptoms long after the acute infection has resolved. This Collection aims to delve into the underlying mechanisms driving these post-COVID neurological sequelae and explore the latest therapeutic advances in managing these conditions.

The persistent neurological symptoms observed in individuals with post-COVID syndrome not only significantly impact their quality of life but also pose challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. By delving deeper into the mechanisms driving these complications, we can tailor interventions more effectively, potentially reducing the long-term burden on both patients and healthcare resources. Interdisciplinary research has already yielded promising results. Recent advances include the identification of specific inflammatory pathways associated with post-COVID neurological symptoms, paving the way for targeted interventions. Continued research holds the promise of refining existing treatments and uncovering novel therapeutic modalities, potentially offering relief to a broader spectrum of individuals affected by post-COVID syndrome.

Topics of interest to this Collection include, but are not limited to:

  • Viral neurotropism in post-COVID neurological sequelae
  • Immunopathogenesis of post-COVID neurological complications
  • Mast cell activation syndrome in the context of post-COVID syndrome
  • Inflammatory pathways driving neurological symptoms in COVID-19 survivors
  • Post COVID and ME/CFS: one or two diseases
  • Microvascular Injury and blood clotting disorders post-COVID
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to understanding post-COVID neurologic pathophysiology
  • Plasmapheresis for treating post-COVID condition
  • Antiviral therapy of COVID-19 and post-COVID risk
  • Antihistamines and post-COVID syndrome
  • Therapeutic advances in alleviating cognitive dysfunction in post-COVID syndrome
  • Exploring biomarkers for diagnostic challenges in post-COVID neurological manifestations
  • Rehabilitative strategies for peripheral nervous system involvement in post-COVID Syndrome
