Bharat Gurnani: Om Prakash Eye Institute, India

Dr. Bharat Gurnani is a Cataract, Cornea, External Diseases, Ocular Surface, Trauma and Refractive Surgery consultant at Om Prakash Eye Institute, Amritsar, Punjab, India and has keen interest in research and publication. He has published more than 200 peer reviewed articles in various international and national journals and has reviewed over 350 papers for various journals. His keen interests are microbial keratitis, keratoconus, dry eye, ocular trauma and lamellar surgeries.

Ho sik Hwang: Catholic University of Korea, Seoul

Dr. Ho sik Hwang, MD, PhD works as an associate professor of ophthalmology at Catholic university of Korea, Seoul. His research areas of interest include dry eye syndrome, Meibomian gland, conjunctival goblet cell and multifocal intraocular lens.


Rohan Bir Singh: Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts, USA

Dr. Rohan Bir Singh is a Fellow at the Laboratory of Corneal Immunology, Transplantation and Regeneration at the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School. He graduated from the Government Medical College & Hospital, Panjab University, India. His research interests include dry eye disease and corneal transplantation immunology, clinical manifestations of ocular graft-versus-host disease and epidemiology of corneal disorders in the United States. Dr. Singh is also a visiting lecturer at the Division of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, Adelaide Medical School, the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has published more than 50 peer reviewed publications and chapters and edited three textbooks. He is a member of the editorial board of BMC Ophthalmology, Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology and Frontiers in Ophthalmology and has peer reviewed articles for more than 20 journals.

About the collection

Ocular surface diseases (OSD) such as dry eye disease or anterior blepharitis have become more prevalent, causing visual disturbances, ocular discomfort in patients; however, these disorders continue to remain undiagnosed in majority of the populace. The evidence suggests that there is an increasing incidence of  ocular allergies requiring long-term management. 

In the past two decades,  there has been an increased research focus on the underlying pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Novel biomarkers found in the tear fluid and alterations in the ocular microbiome are increasingly gaining recognition as possible diagnostic tools and hence gaining interest of research groups globally.

We are launching a collection focused on the debilitating chronic diseases of the ocular surface, with the aim to collate recent advances and to comprehensively review developments in OSD research.

We are particularly interested in research on the pathogenesis of OSD as well as in studies describing novel patient-centric treatment strategies. We will be considering both basic and clinical research but strongly encourage authors to submit their experimental work to this collection. We are also interested in high-quality systematic reviews and meta-analyses from this field.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

● Advances in treatment of dry eye disease, Meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis 

● Basic research focused on the pathophysiology of OSD

● Newer imaging modalities for clinical diagnostics of OSD

● Ocular surface and tear biomarkers

● OSD as the consequence of ophthalmic surgery
