BMC Ophthalmology is calling for submissions to our Collection on metagenomics in ophthalmology. The study of genetic material recovered directly from environmental samples, has emerged as a powerful tool in elucidating the complex microbial communities inhabiting the ocular surface, conjunctiva, cornea, and other ocular tissues. As a result, the field of ophthalmology is witnessing a transformative shift in understanding ocular diseases and their pathogenesis through the lens of metagenomics.
The aim of this Collection is to showcase the advancements in methodologies, applications, and clinical implications of metagenomic approaches in ophthalmology. Therefore, this collection welcomes research articles that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Host-microbiome interactions
- Metagenomic profiling techniques
- Therapeutic strategies targeting the ocular microbiome
- Personalized medicine approaches
- Clinical translation and implementation
