Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts is calling for submissions to our Collection on Microbiota for Future Sustainable Bioproduction. The last three decades have witnessed advances in engineering individual microbes to produce chemicals and materials. However, engineering microbial consortia has lagged. Recent technological innovation in synthetic biology has facilitated the development of experimental and computational tools that enable microbiome engineering. Given the complexity of global problems that are difficult to solve using a single microbe, microbiota engineering is likely to be a future solution to climate crisis, pollution, food inequality, food shortage, biosecurity, biosafety, and sustainable bioproduction of medicines, chemicals, fuels, and materials. This topical collection covers synthetic biology approaches to address these global problems as well as associated issues such as biosafety and biosecurity when the microbiota is engineered.
