BMC Neurology is calling for submissions to a new Collection on cancer pain. Topics of interest include the molecular and neurophysiological origins of cancer pain, comprehensive assessment tools balancing objective and subjective measures, and individualized multimodal management techniques. The Collection also hopes to highlight research on neuropathic pain in oncology, palliative care, and the psychological ramifications of cancer pain.

Nicola Montano, MD, PhD, Department of Neuroscience, Neurosurgery Section, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy

Dr Nicola Montano is the Director of the Functional Neurosurgery Operative Unit at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, Italy. His main areas of interest are cranial and spinal neuro-oncology, epilepsy surgery, surgical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain, and minimally invasive spine surgery. He is a member of the editorial boards of international, peer-reviewed journals in the field of neurosurgery and medical science, including BMC Neurology. He is currently serving as editor and reviewer for international neurosurgical scientific journals. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in international journals in the fields of neuro-oncology, spine surgery, and functional neurosurgery.

Yohannes W. Woldeamanuel, MD, Stanford Headache Center, Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, USA

Dr Yohannes W. Woldeamanuel is currently an Instructor at the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford University School of Medicine. He obtained NCI funding to determine the efficacy of a sleep behavioral intervention to reduce headache burden in cancer survivors from a multi-center clinical trial as well as identify patient phenotypes and response predictors. Additionally, he is an awardee of several prestigious fellowships and has a strong publication record with many first-authorship articles in high impact medical journals. Dr Woldeamanuel consults for his clinic in Addis Abäba, Advanced Clinical Consultation, where he provides his expertise to neurological and general medical patients. He currently serves as editorial board member for BMC Neurology.

About the Collection

BMC Neurology is now welcoming submissions to a forthcoming Collection focused on the challenging field of cancer pain. Through this Collection we hope to highlight new and innovative research on the intricate interplay between oncology and neurology, shedding light on the mechanisms, assessment, management, perception, and impact of pain in cancer patients.

The study of cancer pain encompasses a wide spectrum of etiologies including direct tumor infiltration, neuropathic manifestations, and treatment-related side effects. The impact of cancer pain extends well beyond physical discomfort, significantly influencing the overall quality of life and psychosocial well-being of affected individuals.

Our Collection seeks to address these crucial concerns by bringing together cutting-edge research and insightful perspectives from renowned experts in the field. We invite contributions that encompass a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

Molecular, cellular, and neurophysiological mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of cancer-related pain
Multimodal management strategies for cancer pain, with an emphasis on individualized treatment plans tailored to patients' specific needs
Psychological and social impact of cancer pain
Strategies and tools for the accurate and comprehensive assessment of cancer pain, considering both objective and subjective measures
Neuropathic pain in oncology
Palliative care and interdisciplinary collaboration
