Kangmin Duan: The University of Manitoba, Canada

Prof. Kangmin Duan is a professor in the Department of Oral Biology, Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. His research is in the areas of oral microbiome, bacterial pathogenesis, and cell-cell interactions.
 


Gaetano Isola: University of Catania, Italy
Dr. Gaetano Isola is a senior Assistant Professor of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, at the University of Catania, Italy. Dr. Isola is advisor of several research projects and has been invited to speak at several national and international conferences of Periodontology and Oral Surgery. He is author of over 100 national and international peer-reviewed publications. His main research interests focus on the clinical, biological and pharmacological aspects of periodontitis, and the relationship between oral health and systemic health.

Smitha Sukumar: The University of Sydney, Australia
Dr. Smitha Sukumar is a Senior Lecturer and general dentist at Sydney Dental School and also maintains a private practice. Her principal research area is in oral microbiology, specifically genome-based investigation of oral resistome (collective of antibiotic resistance genes) in health and disease, using Next Generation Sequencing platforms. 


Leanne Teoh: The University of Melbourne, Australia
Dr. Leanne Teoh is a dentist, pharmacist and Lecturer of Dental Therapeutics at the Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne. Her research interest is dental prescribing practices, with a focus on dental antibiotic stewardship.



 

Wendy Thompson: The University of Manchester, UK
Dr. Wendy Thompson is a clinical lecturer in primary dental care at the University of Manchester, UK. Her research interest is dental antibiotic stewardship with a focus on urgent dental care.

About the collection

Antibiotics remain the primary treatment for many bacterial infections, including those that negatively impact our oral health. In the USA, it has been estimated that dentists prescribe approximately 10% of outpatient antibiotics. Yet the spread of antibiotic resistance due to inappropriate prescribing and overuse presents a major global health risk.  Antibiotic resistance challenges the effective delivery of a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8 and 10. To bring attention to this issue, BMC Oral Health has launched this Collection to bring together research on:

  • The use of antibiotics in oral surgery and dentistry
  • Antibiotic resistance in dentistry
  • Characterising antibiotic knowledge and prescribing practices by dentists
  • Improving the appropriate use of antibiotics by targeting the diagnostic, prescribing and behavioural aspects.
  • The development of new tools, materials, technologies and practices to prevent, treat and reduce the transmission of bacteria and resistance genes.
