BMC Ophthalmology is calling for submissions to our Collection on the advancements in myopia research. Myopia, a prevalent refractive error affecting millions worldwide, demands a comprehensive understanding of its short and long-term impacts on vision and overall well-being. This Collection delves into the latest advancements in myopia research, ranging from cutting edge epidemiology and etiology findings, to innovative diagnostic tools, clinical insights, and translational perspectives.

Andrzej Grzybowski, MD, PhD, MBA, MAE, University of Warmia and Mazury, Poland

Andrzej Grzybowski is an international expert in cataract surgery, retina disorders, myopia control and applications of AI in Ophthalmology. He is President of European Vision & Eye Research Association (EVER), a lifelong member (chair LIV) and Treasurer of the European Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Academia Europea. As the only Polish ophthalmologist, he was included in the TOP 2% ranking of world-best scientists prepared by Stanford University for 2019 and 2020. Expertscape worldwide ranking: No 1 in cataract field and No 1 in cataract extraction field; No 3 in endophthalmitis field. In 2021, he received the International Society for Refractive Surgery Founders’ Award. Listed on the “The Power List” by The Ophthalmologist magazine, a ranking of the Top 100 most influential people in the world of ophthalmology.  

Kai Jin, MD, PhD, Zhejiang University, China

Dr Kai Jin is a doctor and professor (tenure-track) of the Eye Center, The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China. His current research interests are retina, imaging, artificial intelligence and personalized medicine. He received his PhD in 2018 and has an outstanding publication record, with 70 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr Jin’s Scientific Citations number is 1300 and his Hirsch index is 20. In the past year, Dr Jin was awarded the WILEY Top Cited Article Award.

Carla Rita dos Santos Costa Lança, PhD, Independent researcher, UAE

Carla  Lança is an independent researcher in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She was awarded with a PhD in Public Health from NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal, for her research in visual function and reading performance in school children. She is an educator with more than 10 years of experience as an Assistant Professor in Orthoptics and Visual Science at Lisbon School of Health Technology (ESTeSL), Portugal. She did a 3-year research fellowship in myopia at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. Dr Carla Lança published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and is a member of several editorial boards. 

About the Collection

BMC Ophthalmology is calling for submissions to our Collection on the advancements in myopia research. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a significant public health concern affecting millions worldwide. Over the past decades, the prevalence of myopia has been steadily increasing, particularly in urban areas and among younger populations. The interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors has contributed to this epidemic, making myopia a multifaceted and challenging condition to address. 

The aim of this Collection is to bridge the gap between theoretical advancements and clinical application in myopia research.  Therefore this Collection welcomes research articles that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Genetic and environmental risk factors for myopia
  • Mechanisms underlying myopia development
  • Efficacy of preventive interventions
  • Novel treatment modalities for managing myopia progression
  • Advancements in imaging and AI for diagnosis
  • Clinical insights and case studies
  • Public health implications and strategies for myopia awareness and prevention
  • Translational perspectives
