Research in BMC Medicine gave a lift to wine-lovers, suggesting that two to seven glasses a week could reduce depression rates in middle-aged and older people. The PREDIMED study in Spain has recently shown benefits to health from eating nuts, and the new article was reported in the Daily Telegraph and ABC.es. And good news for the good hearted: volunteering is linked to increased longevity in a review article in BMC Public Health. Time and the Huffington Post both covered the article. |

| Great ideas come from everywhere |

The idea that insights from the healthcare systems of low-income countries might be transferable from low to high-income countries is common in global health and innovation publications. The journal Globalization and Health wants to take this idea further to develop an international forum for high-quality research, where academics, practitioners, leaders, and policy-makers can come together to learn, share and critique emerging results on the subject. A Commentary, co-authored by the Minister of Health for Rwanda, outlines a number of healthcare innovations that describe Rwanda's progress in generating an environment for evidence-based healthcare innovation. |

Publishing is changing, and the change has been examined and documented around the world. There is, as yet, no comprehensive picture of the scholarly publishing environment in Africa. For two weeks, from September 6, Clobridge Consulting is running a research project to gather data on the barriers, critical success factors, and current trends in dissemination and business models. The first phase of research will be a survey to elicit a mix of quantitative and qualitative responses from African-based journal editors and publishers. Previously published by Springer in French as Andrologie, this open access journal will present innovative research covering all aspects of male reproductive and sexual health, with the hope of bringing light to clinical advancements and research developments across the global research community. Not only will Basic and Clinical Andrology offer freely available research, it will publish abstracts in both English and French. As with the journal's previous incarnation, Basic and Clinical Andrology will be affiliated with Sociéété d'Andrologie de Langue Française (SALF), the French–speaking Society of Andrology. |

"Dementia: a journey of caring" is the theme of this year's World Alzheimer's Month. Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), the global voice on dementia, are working with Alzheimer associations across the world to focus attention on the care required by people with dementia throughout the course of the disease. A Facebook app, 'Let Memories Last', has been developed to allow people to experience what dementia is like. ADI will also launch its 2013 World Alzheimer's Report on 'Long Term Care' in Washington DC on 19th September. Find out more about World Alzheimer's Month and how you can get involved here.
