Mapping the risks of H7N9 infection in China

Avian influenza A (H7N9) is a tricky version of bird flu which seems to be sweeping across China. A lack of information about the virus and its mode of transmission has led to public concerns that H7N9 could be a pandemic waiting to happen. This study, published in Infectious Diseases of Poverty, develops a model to characterize the impacts of bird migration and poultry distribution on the geographic spread of the infection.

CEVAP celebrates its 20th anniversary

The Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals (CEVAP) will be celebrating 20 years as an official São Paulo State University (UNESP) research unit on the 27th May 2013.

Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases (JVATiTD) is CEVAP's official journal, which transferred to BioMed Central earlier this year.

The journal welcomes submissions of original research and review articles via its online submission system.

Public registration of clinical trials: your feedback needed

BioMed Central supports initiatives to improve performance and reporting of clinical trials and an ever increasing number of medical journals require registration of clinical trials before publication. The ISRCTN trial register, part of BioMed Central, offers clinical trial registration services. Established in 2000, more than 11,000 trials have been registered and annually over 230,000 people use the site as either a trialist, researcher, systematic reviewer, health policy maker or patient.

To reflect the changes in clinical trial registration requirements since 2000, we would like to update and redesign our services. Therefore we would greatly appreciate if you could complete this short survey about what you require from a public trial register site.

Science behind the News

The increased risk of coronary heart disease conferred by a 5 unit increase in BMI is equivalent to getting older by 2.5 years. This study from BMC Medicine made news in the Telegraph, Daily Mail, Yahoo, and Express.

As seen on Channel 4, LiveScience, and New Scientist, an article in the launch issue of Animal Biotelemetry revealed that a two yearlong migration pattern of female white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) fits in with their 18 month long pregnancy.

Journal news

Journal logo Journal of Molecular Psychiatry launches
Journal of Molecular Psychiatry, a new open access journal published by BioMed Central, has launched with its first published articles. Read the blog for more information about this exciting addition to our portfolio of psychiatry journals.
Journal logo Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound begins to make waves in a growing field
Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound has now launched in partnership with the Focused Ultrasound Foundation and the International Society for Therapeutic. The journal, led by Editors-in-Chief Arik Hananel and Robert Muratore, encompasses all aspects of therapeutic ultrasound, namely, the stimulus, inhibition, or modification of tissue function or structure via insonification. For more information visit the journal website or read the launch blog.
Journal logo A hub for pharmaceutical policy research
Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice (formerly Southern Med Review) edited by Dr. Zaheer-Ud-Din Babar is accepting submissions in all areas of pharmacy including social, clinical, administrative or economic research. The journal is affiliated with The University of Auckland and provides a platform for scientific dialogue surrounding global pharmaceutical policy. For more information please visit the journal website.
Journal logo CAPMH affiliates with IACAPAP
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health is now the official journal of IACAPAP; an international society dedicated to promoting the mental health and development of children and adolescents through policy, practice and research.
Journal logo Acta Neuropathologica Communications launches
Acta Neuropathologica Communications (ANC), a new open access journal focusing on the pathology and mechanisms of neurological disease has launched. Led by Editor-in-Chief Werner Paulus, the journal hopes to emulate the success of its sister, Acta Neuropathalogica. With an Editorial Board of experienced researchers that support Werner with peer review, articles should take no longer than two months from submission to publication in ANC.

New from BMC Biology

- The great American palaeontologist and anatomist Alfred Romer speculated that early in animal life, an emerging somatic nervous system, focused on the outside world, struggled to dominate the visceral nervous system that takes care of the internal systems that keep us alive. Jean-François Brunet and colleagues identify the molecular signatures that tell the evolutionary tale of this duality.
See commentary: Ancient origins of the duality of the somatic and visceral nervous systems
- Observations on the number, location, phagocytic activity and cell division of hemocytes in the body cavity of mosquitoes sheds new light on the biology of insect immune system cells.
See blog: A quantitative map of immune cells in mosquitoes

Madness or sadness? Local concepts of mental illness in four conflict–affected African communities
Conflict and Health 2013, 7:3
Concepts of 'what constitutes mental illness', the presumed aetiology and preferred treatment options, vary considerably from one cultural context to another. Knowledge and understanding of these local conceptualisations is essential to inform public mental health programming and policy.
Less is more: strategies to remove marker genes from transgenic plants
BMC Biotechnology 2013, 13:36
Selectable marker genes are used to select plant cells that have been successfully modified with foreign genetic material. These markers confer antibiotic- or herbicide resistance and their presence in genetically modified plants is strictly regulated in many countries. Yuan-Yeu Yau and C Neal Stewart review existing strategies to remove them and explore emerging technologies for increased precision genome modification.
