Research Awards judges

Nominations for BioMed Central's 7th Annual Research Awards have now come to a close. Our team of biological and medical Editors are preparing the shortlist of articles for the judges of each award category to assess. Welcoming back previous judges and some new faces too, we are delighted to again have a wide breadth of renowned expertise in our judging panel to choose the winning articles and recognize individuals for their innovation in 2012.

Cilia is now indexed in PubMed and PubMed Central

We are pleased to announce that Cilia is now indexed in PubMed and PubMed Central. Cilia publishes cutting–edge basic and translational research on the biology of cilia and diseases associated with ciliary dysfunction. It provides a forum for sharing research and discussing this oldest known – but once forgotten – organelle, and welcomes contributions using various experimental approaches, including cell and developmental biology, human and molecular genetics, and use of model organisms.

Science behind the news

Cheating behavior of the slime mould Dictyostelium was reported in National Geographic (in English and in Spanish). The article in BMC Evolutionary Biology explained that a 'cheater' mutation ensures that they become spores at the expense of 'normal' cells.

Yahoo, Fox News, Huffington Post, The Australian, and Live Science,  all discussed an article in Investigative Genetics which demonstrated that hair and eye colour can be revealed even from DNA within ancient human remains.

Journal news

Journal logo New affiliation and special series for Alzheimer's Research & Therapy
Alzheimer's Research & Therapy is newly affiliated to Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), the international federation of national Alzheimer organizations. ADI works globally to focus attention on the Alzheimer's epidemic, by hosting an annual conference and campaigning for policy change from governments and the World Health Organization. Read more here.

Alzheimer's Research & Therapy is also accepting research submissions for a special series on peripheral biomarkers, edited by Douglas Galasko (UCSD). Authors that submit research to this special series will be entitled to a 50% article–processing charge discount. Find out more here.
Journal logo Genome Medicine call for papers: Single cell analysis
Genome Medicine is pleased to announce that it will publish a special issue on the topic of Single cell analysis: into the clinic in the summer, which will be guest edited by Michael Speicher (Medical University of Graz, Austria) with contributions from Garry Nolan (Stanford, US) and James Heath (Caltech, US). Read more here.
Journal logo Journal of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery
Journal of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, the official publication of the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, has recently published its first articles following transfer to BioMed Central. The journal is now fully open access following 40 years as a subscription–based journal, more information can be found in this blog post and via the journal website.
Journal logo A new thematic series: Climatic benefits of forests in Europe
We invite submissions to a series in Carbon Balance and Management aiming towards a better understanding of the climate benefits of European forests. The first two articles published in the series investigate the biogeophysical effects of potential afforestation and maximising carbon storage in managed forests.
Journal logo Using and abusing evidence in science and health policy – a new cross–journal series
This series of articles investigates how evidence is used in a variety of health and science policy domains, specifically considering the ways in which it has been used and represented in laws, policies and regulations, and the challenges and barriers to its use in policy development.
Journal logo Publishing names in the digital era
In a commentary published recently in Frontiers in Zoology, Alessandro Minelli calls for radical changes to zoological nomenclature. He envisages a future where the act of registering a name, with accompanying taxonomic data, would confer the availability of that name in the same way that publication does currently.

New from BMC Biology

- To celebrate its tenth anniversary, BMC Biology asked its Editorial Board members to write a paragraph or two on their favorite open questions in biology, and this month it publishes the first contributions, on topics from the challenges of proteomics to the mechanisms of apoptosis.

See article series: Open questions in biology
- The three–dimensional anatomy of the zebra finch vocal organ is described in unprecedented detail, providing new insights into the biomechanics of song production in a species widely used as an experimental model for vocal learning.

aB–crystallin as a marker for Laryngeal SCC
Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research 2012, 31:101
Alpha B–crystallin expression is correlated with malignant phenotypes of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and may serve as a novel prognostic factor for the disease.
Clean green sunscreen
Journal of Nanobiotechnology 2013, 11:3
Naturally occurring nanoparticles found in English Ivy, Hedera helix, could confer UV protection with greater transparency and lower cytotoxicity than the metal oxides that are commonly used as sunscreen.
