Open questions in biology

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of its publication, BMC Biology has invited its Editorial Board to say, in a paragraph or two, what they think are the most interesting or important open questions in biology. The first few, ranging from the challenge of proteomics to the mechanism of an unconventional variant of apoptosis, are published this month, with more to come next month when Sean Munro asks what is left for cell biologists to do. We hope to celebrate our tenth birthday with research papers providing some answers.

Three new journals have launched

Microbiome seeks to unite investigators conducting microbiome research in environmental, agricultural, and biomedical arenas. Health Information Science and Systems, a multidisciplinary journal, aims to use technologies in computer science to assist in disease diagnoses, treatment, prediction and monitoring through the modeling, design, development, visualization, integration and management of health related information. Cancer & Metabolism welcomes studies on all aspects of the link between metabolic pathways and cancer. For more information, see here, here and here.

Nominations are now closed for BioMed Central's 7th Annual Research Awards

Nominations are now closed for our 7th Annual Research Awards. The shortlist will be announced soon so keep an eye on the Research Awards website for updates.

Science behind the News

Reported in Scientific American, research in Environmental Health shows that, because  1.5–2 million children in the EU are born each year with methylmercury exposures above the safe limit, mercury pollution costs the EU €10,000 million per year. The costs are probably even higher when taking into account heart disease.
Science 2.0 covered an article in BMC Pediatrics which found evidence that celiac 'epidemics' are linked to infections early in a child's life.

Journal news

Journal logo miRNA signatures of osteosarcoma prognosis recently published in Genome Medicine
Genome Medicine has recently published a study using formalin–fixed paraffin–embedded osteosarcoma samples to define miRNA expression signatures predictive of survival, recurrence and chemoresponse. This article is part of a series on Pharmacogenomics.

Two new thematic series
Biotechnology for Biofuels has just launched a Special issue on green fuels and chemicals, from forest biomass. Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation also has a new thematic series, focussing on rehabilitation treatment strategies for CNS disorders.
Journal logo WAO Journal becomes open access
WAO Journal, the official journal of the World Allergy Organization (WAO), has transferred to BioMed Central's open access publishing platform. Read the latest position statement from WAO, a unique case report of aquagenic urticaria in monozygotic twins, along with an Editorial from Editor–in–Chief, Dr Lanny Rosenwasser, on the website.

New from BMC Medicine

RAMESES: new publication standards
Geoff Wong, Trish Greenhalgh et al. propose new publication guidelines for realist synthesis and meta–narrative reviews. The 'RAMESES' (Realist and Meta–review Evidence Synthesis: Evolving Standards) statement provides researchers, institutes and journals with guidance on how to conduct these new forms of literature analysis, and adherence to the guidelines is expected to lead to quality assurance and uniform reporting of studies.
In an accompanying commentary, David Gough emphasizes the importance of applying rigorous research methods to literature analysis, whilst also maintaining quality appraisal and transparency.

Novel approach for treatment of neurogenic pain
Molecular Pain 2013, 9:1
Decreasing the cholesterol content of a cell affects the ionic selectivity of TRPV1, this modulation of the TRPV1 ion channel may constitute a novel mechanism to ameliorate pain and inflammation.
A new social gene in Dictyostelium discoideum, chtB
BMC Evolutionary Biology 2013, 13:4
Under tough conditions individuals of the single–celled slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum work together to form a fruiting body, but a strain that bears a particular mutation can cheat the system to preferentially reproduce, apparently without cost.

Mycotic aneurysm of the femoral artery resulting from mismanagement of a pathological femur fracture due to chronic osteomyelitis: a case report
Erisa Sabakaki Mwaka and Phillip Mulepo
Journal of Medical Case Reports 2012, 7:8
(9 January 2013)
The first reported case of chronic osteomyelitis associated with a pathological fracture of the femur and a mycotic aneurysm of the femoral artery suggests aneurysms associated with chronic osteomyelitis should be considered during diagnosis in regions where traditional management of injuries are prevalent.
