BioMed Central journals demonstrate their impact

With the release last week of the 2011 Journal Citation Report, 122 BioMed Central journals now have official Impact Factors. Many titles improved their rankings including Genome Biology (IF 9.04), BMC Medicine (IF 6.04), BMC Biology (IF 5.75) and Genetics Selection & Evolution (IF 2.89). 19 journals received their first Impact Factor this year, including BMC Medical Ethics (1.74) and Cell Communication and Signaling (IF 5.50).

For further information and a full list of the new Impact Factors, see the blog post.

CONFERENCE THEME ANNOUNCEMENT

As announced previously, the Berlin 10 Open Access Conference will be held at Stellenbosch, South Africa. The Conference will be held at the Wallenberg Research Centre, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) from 7-8 November 2012. Pre-conference workshops will be held on 6 November. The theme of the Conference is Networked scholarship in a networked world: participation in Open Access. Given that the Conference will be held in Africa, the sub-themes to be explored are concomitant with the development and transformative agenda of Open Access.

The cancer-obesity link - panel discussion on video

Apple
Obesity has overtaken smoking as the major risk factor in cancer. Speakers participating in the panel discussion at the BioMed Central conference on Metabolism, Diet and Disease, held in Washington DC in May, chaired by Gregory Petsko, tackled questions including whether the cancers can be prevented without addressing the obesity, what dietary factors may be most crucial, the role of insulin, what can be done, and what do we still need to know?

Journal news

Journal logo Aβ burden in transgenic mice
In latest research from Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy, an increased amyloid β (Aβ) burden in transgenic mice is found to correlate with progressive impairment in fear conditioned memory; indicating a therapeutic potential for memory improvement in mouse models of amyloidosis.
Journal logo 'The Genetic Basis of Mood and Anxiety Disorders' thematic series - now accepting submissions
A new thematic series, guest edited by Elisabeth Binder, will publish original research alongside commissioned review articles with the aim of providing a widely accessible forum for the presentation and discussion of advances and approaches for mapping the genetic basis of mood and anxiety disorders. Please submit your article online, for further information read the blog post or contact the Biology of Mood & Anxiety Disorders editorial office.
Journal logo BMC series journals sectioned
It is now possible to browse most of the BMC series journals using subject-specific sections. This is designed to allow both authors and readers to submit to a specific journal section and browse published articles in the same way. More information is available in this blog.

New from BMC Biology

- Eugene Koonin and Valerian Dolja consider the complex web of evolutionary relationships between RNA viruses, commenting on two new dsRNA genomes reported in BMC Evolutionary Biology, and two recent surprises yielded by metagenomics in geothermal waters
- It has been eloquently argued that you cannot understand a genome without knowing its natural history, and despite it being one of the key model species in biology, little is known about C. elegans in its natural environment. Felix and Duveau take a stride in the right direction with a report on the population dynamics of this nematode and the related C. briggsae in rotting apples in the orchards of France. See linked commentary: The worm in the world and the world in the worm

Meta-analysis of human lung cancer microRNA expression profiling studies comparing cancer tissues with normal tissues mRNA expression in lung cancer
Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research 2012, 31:54
Meta-analysis of human lung cancer microRNA expression profiling studies found miR-210 and miR-21 to be the most consistently reported up-regulated mRNAs, which may identify them as potential biomarkers in the disease
Jumping plant genes Jumping plant genes
BMC Genomics 2012, 13:227
Charles Davis and colleagues provide first evidence of horizontal gene transfer from host to the parasitic flowering plant, Rafflesia cantleyi, on an unprecedented scale raising the possibility that there is a 'fitness' benefit to the parasite.
