A forum for opinions on the concept of a stem cell niche

Why do stem cells need a special environment - the niche - and how is this regulated in different tissues? Eight experts from fields ranging from C. elegans to the gut, skin and metastatic cancer cells provide their perspective on the stem cell niche in their systems, launching a new forum article type in BMC Biology as part of the cross-journal collection on stem cells.

New from BMC Biology

-  Research on how highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses might become transmissible between humans has ignited heated debate on the balance of risks and benefits of such experiments. Peter Doherty and Paul Thomas give their views.
-  New research from David Plachetzki and colleagues indicates that sting cell discharge in the eyeless cnidarian hydra is regulated by opsin-mediated phototransduction, a pathway used in vision in other animals.
