No caesarean section without cause
No caesarean section without cause   New research in BMC Medicine suggests that caesarean sections should only be considered when there is clear medical benefit that outweighs both the increased risks and associated cost, especially in Africa.

New from BMC Biology

•A transcriptomic comparison of wild with domesticated cotton fiber cells shows transcriptional differences affecting almost a quarter of the genome during the development of the fiber, probably reflecting metabolic changes required to prolong fiber elongation.

•Briana Gross and Jared Strasburg briefly review recent insights into the genetic changes that underlie plant domestication, in the course of discussing the domestication of cotton in the light of a new transcriptomic paper from Jonathan Wendel and colleagues.

Attitudes towards stigmatized conditions

Von Willebrand Factor brings cells together
Stem Cell Research & Therapy 2010, 1:35
In response to stress, endothelial cells release von Willebrand Factor, which regulates endothelial cell adhesiveness for mesenchymal stem cells via activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase.

Synthetic biology versus evolution

  Synthetic biology versus evolution
Journal of Biological Engineering 2010, 4:12
Genetic circuits in synthetic microbes mutate over generations and although their stability can be improved by the sequence design, this carries the cost of reduced expression of the target gene.
