Case study 4: An evolutionary spurt in an open access environment
International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (IJBPNA) launched as a new title with BioMed Central in 2004 as the official journal of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
The society initially provided support for the young journal by covering the APCs for all authors publishing in the journal. After some years, APCs were introduced and simultaneously the society arranged to offer a 50% discount on the APC for its members. Subsequently, the journal introduced a slightly higher APC to be payable by non-members of the society, and the difference provides a revenue stream to support the society’s activities. IJBNPA is a great example of the changes a journal can make to its financial model, adjusting to the journal’s development and the needs of societies.
IJBNPA received its first Impact Factor in 2009 and currently has an Impact Factor of 3.58, ranking it highly within the field.
