Genome Biology Award judging panel announced

Joining the journal's editor, Clare Garvey, will be Dr Paul Flicek and Professor Laurence Hurst. Dr Flicek leads the Vertebrate Genomics team at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge. Prof Hurst is currently Professor of Evolutionary Genetics at the University of Bath. Both judges are keep open access supporters and have been involved with Genome Biology as editorial advisers for some time.

Biology Image Library announces new awards for 4th Annual Research Awards

As part of the 4th Annual Research Awards, BioMed Central will be presenting two new awards recognising the best image and movie published in Biology Image Library during 2009. The judging panel includes BioMed Central's Biology Director, Dr Michaela Torkar and Associate Editorial Director (Biology), Dr Miranda Robertson.

The awards will be announced at an awards ceremony in June 2010.

The Genome Biology Award - Celebrating 10 years of excellence

In 2010 Genome Biology will celebrate its tenth birthday. As part of the celebrations we are delighted to announce a ‘The Genome Biology Award - Celebrating 10 years of excellence’.

Please nominate a research article published in Genome Biology in 2009 for consideration. The winning article will be judged by a panel including the journal’s Editor Clare Garvey and external experts. The winner will be announced at the Annual BioMed Central Research Awards dinner in June 2010.

Nominations for the 4th Annual Research Awards now open

BioMed Central today announced that nominations its 4th Annual Research Awards are now open. Nominations for the awards are being accepted and will close 31 December 2009. Anyone who publishes original research of major significance in one of BioMed Central's journals during 2008 is eligible for nomination.

The winning articles will be selected by a panel including BioMed Central editorial team members and external experts in biology and medicine. The winners will be announced at the Annual BioMed Central Research Awards dinner in June 2010.

Winners announced at awards ceremony in London

The winners of BioMed Central's 3rd Annual Research Awards were announced at an awards ceremony at London's Barbican Centre. The event was attended by shortlisted authors, eminent researchers from around the world, open access advocates and science journalists.

The Medicine and Biology awards, sponsored by Microsoft Research, were won by the following research articles:

Biology Award

Imp-L2, a putative homolog of vertebrate IGF-binding protein 7, counteracts insulin signaling in Drosophila and is essential for starvation resistance
Honegger B, Galic M, Köhler K, Wittwer F, Brogiolo W, Hafen E, Stocker H

Journal of Biology 2008, 7:10 (15 April 2008)

This research describes the genetic identification of the first functional insulin-like growth factor binding protein ortholog in invertebrates.


Medicine Award

Improved outcomes from the administration of progesterone for patients with acute severe traumatic brain injury: a randomized controlled trial
Xiao G, Wei J, Yan W, Wang W, Lu Z

Critical Care 2008, 12:R61 (30 April 2008)

This study explains how a common component of the contraceptive pill (progesterone) could improve the neurologic outcome for patients with severe head injuries.


This year, three new awards were introduced:

Pediatric Rheumatology 2008, 6:15 (18 September 2008)

This case demonstrates the unusual ways that tuberculosis can present in our patients and highlights the difficulty in diagnosing non-pulmonary tuberculosis.

Shortlist for the Medicine Prize announced

The shortlist for the Medicine Prize has been decided. In addition to the Biology and Medicine Prizes, BioMed Central has introduced some new award categories, including the Best Case Report, Editor of the Year and Open Access Institute of the Year. These will all be presented at the ceremony in London next month.
