BIOLOGY IMAGE LIBRARY JUDGING PANEL
Dr Nick Read
Professor Nick Read is a Subject Head of the Microbiology and Parasitology area of the Biology Image Library, and a Subject Editor for the Fungi section. Nick began his career in microbiology at the University of Bristol where he completed his BSc, PhD and post-doctoral studies. He joined the University of Edinburgh in 1985, becoming professor of fungal cell biology in 2005. Nick’s main research interest is the developmental pathways resulting from conidial germination in Neurospora crassa. His lab is gaining a revolutionary new perspective of the cell biology of fungal hyphae using live-cell imaging and measurement techniques to analyse organelle and molecular dynamics. They use optical tweezers, a wide range of fluorescent and luminescent probes, and confocal and two-photon microscopy to produce striking and beautiful live cell images and movies of fungal hyphae.
Dr Michaela Torkar
Michaela has overall editorial responsibility for BioMed Central's biology publishing activity. This includes the in-house editorial management of a group of biology journals publishing broad-interest research articles and commissioned review content, such as Genome Biology (of which she was Editor for over two years) and BMC Biology. She also oversees the acquisition of new biology journals, and the development and improvement of those titles. Michaela has a degree in biology from Munich University and a PhD in Immunology from Cambridge University. She joined BioMed Central in 2000 (soon after its launch) as a member of the Genome Biology team.
Dr Miranda Robertson
Miranda is Associate Editorial Director (Biology) at BioMed Central, and the Editor of Journal of Biology. She studied psychology at Birkbeck College London and at the University of Chicago in the 1960s without graduating from either and then spent the greater part of a quarter of a century on the editorial staff of Nature, ultimately as its Biology Editor (succeeding Peter Newmark). Since then she has worked with Garland Publishing Inc and Current Biology Ltd, and most recently as the Managing Director of New Science Press, on biomedical textbooks. She returned to journal publishing on joining BioMed Central in 2008.
