BioMed Central’s Annual Research Awards celebrate excellence in scientific research made freely available through open access publishing within our portfolio of over 250 journals. Nominations are open to the scientific community and the winning articles, selected by dedicated judging panels, are chosen for their innovation and high-quality execution and discussion. The awards also acknowledge outstanding individual or institutional efforts made to support open access to research.

Plant Biology, Environmental Biology and Ecology
Articles nominated for this category should include research covering all aspects of plant, environmental and ecology sciences, including biodiversity research, and the impact of human activities on the environment.
Computational and high-throughput studies in genomics and systems biology
Articles nominated for this category should further our understanding of the function and evolution of biological systems through the analysis of genetic, genomic, proteomic or other high throughput data types, or the creation of novel methods for the analysis of such data.
Articles nominated for this category should present research in basic medical sciences that has a direct relevance to, or the potential to inform, future research in clinical medicine.
Articles nominated for this category should present clinical research that has a clear potential to optimize patient care, with particular emphasis on high quality randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews.
Neuroscience, Neurology and Psychiatry
Articles nominated for this category should present research into any aspect of the nervous system. This category includes, molecular, cellular, developmental and animal model studies, cognitive and behavioral research, computational modeling and articles describing research into the prevention, diagnosis and management of neurological and psychiatric disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology.
Public Health and Health Services Research
Articles nominated for this category should present research on the social determinants of health, the environmental, behavioral and occupational correlates of health and disease, as well as all aspects of health services research and the impact of health policies and regulations.
Cancer sponsored by abcam
Articles nominated for this category should present outstanding research in the field of cancer. This includes all aspects of the prevention, diagnosis, pathophysiology epidemiology and management of these disorders.
Animal Science, Veterinary Research and Zoology
Articles nominated for this category should present research covering all aspects of animal and veterinary sciences, including behavioral studies, animal health, epidemiology of animal diseases and tissue, organ and whole organism research.
Microbiology, Immunology, Infection and Inflammation
Articles nominated for this category should include studies of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, viruses and small parasites, and microbe-host interactions; prevention, diagnosis, management and epidemiology of infectious diseases, inflammatory responses, and molecular, cellular, tissue-level, functional and developmental aspects of the immune system.
Molecular and Cellular Science
Articles nominated for this category should present research covering all aspects of the biology of cells and DNA and RNA in a cellular context, including organelles and cellular compartments, cell division, differentiation and programmed cell death and encompassing investigations of chromatin, replication, transcription, translation and RNA processing and function.
Open Access Advocate/Institution of the Year Award
This award recognizes institutions which have done most to show leadership in taking steps to expand access to the published results of scholarly research. This award is not open to the public.
Case Report of the Year
This award is given to the authors of the best medical case report published in a BioMed Central journal. The winning case report is selected for originality and significance to clinical practice, and can be from any area of medicine. This award is open to the public, and is judged by Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Medical Case Reports, Prof Michael Kidd.
Open Data sponsored by LabArchives
Data sharing, its preservation and re-use, is an increasingly important part of scientific research and the publication process but there are many challenges associated with openly sharing scientific data, particularly when sharing goes against cultural or community norms. We recognize researchers who have published in BioMed Central journals and have demonstrated leadership in the sharing, standardization, publication, or re-use of biomedical research data.
Editor of the Year
Our growing portfolio of journals depends heavily on the dedicated work of our Editors. This award recognizes the significant contribution made to one of our journals by an Editor. This award is not open to the public.
