Irish Veterinary Journal is an open access journal that publishes articles on all aspects of veterinary research involving both domestic and wild species of animals.

The aspirations and achievements of the Irish veterinary profession and Irish veterinary science are world-class, in terms of patient care, national disease control, veterinary education and research. This exciting new relationship between Irish Veterinary Journal and BioMed Central, providing open access publishing and concomitant increased international standing, is entirely in keeping with those aspirations and achievements.

Michael Doherty is Professor of Veterinary Clinical Studies in the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD). A veterinary graduate of the University of Edinburgh, he is a Past-President and board member of the European College of Bovine Health Management and Irish national representative for the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation. A ruminant clinician, his collaborative research activities have included studies on bovine immune responses to Mycobacterium bovis, the clinical neurology and epidemiology of scrapie and the molecular genetics of inherited ovine arthrogryposis. An executive member of Animal Health Ireland, he is actively involved with UCD colleagues in the development of national dairy herd health programmes in Ireland. His additional interests include the folklore and etymology of animal disease, the Irish language and Europe’s other Celtic languages.
