Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound encompasses all aspects of therapeutic ultrasound, namely, the stimulus, inhibition, or modification of tissue function or structure via insonification. This open access, peer-reviewed, online journal focuses mainly on translational and clinical research. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of therapeutic ultrasound as a clinical tool.
Therapeutic ultrasound publications have been growing exponentially since 1970, with a time constant of six years. As more devices receive regulatory approval, increased clinical use and associated publications will maintain this growth rate
Robert Muratore’s career has focused on the interaction of energy fields with human tissue. As a graduate student at Syracuse University, he studied the interaction of antiproton beams and the body. As a Resident Research Associate at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke he helped to produce early, predating fMRI, moving images of brain activity from the magnetic fields that are induced by the electrical activity of neurons.
For the past decade and a half, Dr. Muratore has worked with the energy fields from ultrasound beams. As a lead investigator on an NIH Bioengineering Research Partnership, he helped to develop an integrated diagnostic therapeutic ultrasound device for research in high intensity focused ultrasound, with specific application to ventricular ablation for cardiac arrhythmias. Working with transient elastography via the ultrasonic radiation force for ablation monitoring, he adapted the technique for non-invasive mechanical stimulus of neurons. This emerging field of study is called ultrasonic neuromodulation, and he invites papers on this subject to the Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound.
He has served as President of the Ultrasonic Industry Association, United States representative on the International Electrotechnical Commission, and Co-Chair of the 11th International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound. He is editor of several proceedings volumes and author of numerous technical papers.
Dr. Muratore is founder of a science consulting company, Quantum Now LLC, advising organizations on biomedical engineering issues including imaging, ultrasonic therapy, and regulatory affairs.
