Investigative Genetics is a peer-reviewed, open access, online journal that publishes articles on the development and application of molecular genetics in a wide range of science disciplines with societal relevance. These include forensic issues and legal medicine, evolutionary, anthropological and historical studies, as well as epidemiology and biosafety.

Investigative Genetics aims to provide a venue for novel, cutting-edge research and technological developments that will, through the application of molecular genetics, answer questions of past and present life, enhance life quality, and provide a safer living environment.

Because of the developments and capabilities afforded to us today to unravel the mysteries of life, this has to be the most exciting time to be a biological scientist. The 21st century is truly the century of biology. I hope that Investigative Genetics will serve the scientific community well in capturing and conveying some of these advances.

After gaining his PhD in Genetics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1979, and undertaking postdoctoral work in immunogenetics, in 1983 Dr. Budowle began a distinguished career in forensic genetics at the FBI laboratory at Quantico in 1983.

Dr. Budowle recently became Executive Director of the Institute of Investigative Genetics and Professor in the Department of Forensic and Investigative Genetics at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, Texas. His current efforts focus on the areas of human forensic identification, microbial forensics, and emerging infectious disease.

He has published more than 460 articles, testified in well over 200 criminal cases in the areas of molecular biology, population genetics, statistics, quality assurance, and forensic biology, and authored or co-authored books on molecular biology techniques, electrophoresis, protein detection, and microbial forensics.
