BioMed Central wins prestigious award
07 Nov 2008
BioMed Central’s media relations team won the in-house Healthcare and Pharmaceutical category award at the annual PRCA awards (Public Relations Consultancy Association) ceremony held in London on Tuesday night.
Following the decision to move away from agency-led PR to a newly formed in-house function, the team have exceeded expectations, successfully and measurably adopting a more targeted approach to media relations, enabling BioMed Central to deliver consistent, fast and powerful messages to the media and scientific community as a whole.
Results from new processes in place have proved staggering. The number of news stories obtained rose from 52 in December 2007 to 432 in August 2008. Coverage has also been obtained in Austria, Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the US and UK and across print, TV, radio and internet mediums.
A story on a new Alzheimer’s treatment achieved global coverage - from a 3 minute television feature on CNN to the BBC, Daily Telegraph and Mail on Sunday in the UK, and reached as far afield as The Age in Australia. The research was covered extensively on blogs and patient forums and can also be found on YouTube. The research article is now BioMed Central’s 10th most viewed article of all time.
Contacts have been fostered with science journalists and influential bloggers from across the world. This has allowed the team to effectively target the right audiences with tailored releases and messages. As a result there has been a dramatic improvement in the percentage of releases picked up by the press. In December 2007 only 1.08% of releases sent out generated a subsequent story. Now in September 2008, this figure has risen to 21.82%.
Speaking of the award, Head of Public Relations, Matt McKay said, “The team is honored to receive such a prominent industry award. The award recognizes BioMed Central’s success in communicating leading scientific research across the globe.”
