What is SciELO?

The Scientific Electronic Library
Online (SciELO) is an
electronic virtual library
covering a selected collection
of scientific journals
from Latin American and developing
countries. It began in 1997 with
a pilot project involving ten Brazilian
journals from different subject areas.
Since 1998, the project has continued
to grow, incorporating new journal
titles and expanding to include other
countries. SciELO now consists of a
network of national websites and portals.
The SciELO methodology facilitates
electronic publication of complete editions
of scientific journals, organization
of searchable bibliographical and
full-text databases, preservation of
electronic archives, and production of
statistical indicators of the usage and
impact of the scientific literature.
SciELO full texts are also enriched
with dynamic hypertext links to
national and international databases,
such as MEDLINE.
Who is behind SciELO?
The SciELO project is the product of a
partnership between Fundação de
Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São
Paulo (FAPESP, the state of São Paulo
science foundation) and BIREME, the
Latin America and Caribbean Center on
Health Sciences Information. Since
2002, the project has also received
support from CNPq (Conselho Nacional
de Desenvolvimento Científico e
Tecnológico). SciELO also encourages
partnerships among national and international
players in scientific communication,
such as authors, editors, scientific
and technological institutions,
funding agencies, universities, libraries,
scientific and technological information
centers, and so on.
Why does the SciELO exist?
SciELO was conceived to meet the
particular scientific communication
needs of developing countries, particularly
in Latin America and the
Caribbean. The objective was to create
an electronic virtual library, providing
Open Access to a collection of serial
titles, a collection of issues from individual
serial titles, as well as the fulltext
articles.
