Tracey McPhail
Praise from Down-under

Sir,

I am an epidemiologist and statistical student and tutor who happened across your website and I am glad that I did. It's fabulous to see some positive steps being taken to promote equal access in the name of education. Another wonderful benefit in the future will be the chance to conduct true systematic review and meta-analysis (well, free from publication bias anyway).

There is no mention from Australia on your website, as far as I can see, so I aim to promote Open Access to my fellow medical researchers and forward Peter Suber's comments (May 2004) on "what governments should do to actively encourage Open Access publishing" to the Australian government.

I look forward to the next newsletter.

Tracey McPhail

Editor's note: Last December we reported that the Australian government was to spend AU$ 12 million (approximately US$ 8.5 million) to support the management of university information and institutional repositories. For further details see Open Access Now, 1 December 2003.
