Here are just a few of the key highlights since our last Librarian News Update: The UK House of Commons Science and Technology Committee is conducting an inquiry into access to scientific publications, including Open Access publishing. BioMed Central has been invited to give evidence to the Committee in March. Governments from 176 countries including the UK signed a landmark international agreement that explicitly supports Open Access at the United Nations sponsored World Summit on the Information Society in Switzerland in December. Environmental Health Perspectives, a peer-reviewed journal published by a division of the NIH, moved to an Open Access model in January. PNAS published the results of their author survey on Open Access in a recent Editorial. Almost half of the respondents (49.5%) were in favour of Open Access. Open Access submissions ‘through the roof’ BioMed Central’s submission statistics are a clear indicator of researchers’ growing acceptance of the Open Access publishing model. In the latter half of 2003, submissions grew substantially month-on-month. January 2004 submission figures were more than twice the total for the same month in 2003.
Encourage researchers at your institution to support Open Access by publishing in BioMed Central’s journals. For tools to help, see our advocacy pages. |
