News on institutional open access policies

The last few months have been a very exciting time for open access both in Europe and the USA. Recent developments include:

University of Central London (UCL)

UCL had announced plans to implement an open access policy ensuring all its research (subject to copyright) will be made freely available online through their institutional repository.

Dr Paul Ayris, Director of UCL Library Services, made reference to the pressure library budgets are under at the moment and how 'open access helps prospective students make a judgment on which University to choose, shares blue-skies research with the widest possible audience, and supports outreach activity to open up higher education to new communities'. Read the full statement here.

University of Nottingham

University of Nottingham are to open a Centre for Research Communications. This new centre will be based at the university and support a number of open access projects undertaken by the university.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

In March, MIT confirmed plans for an open access policy, which is applicable to all scholarly articles published by its faculty with immediate effect. Visit the MIT website for more details.

Harvard University

Following on from Harvard University's open access policy, the newly established Office for Scholarly Communication have also spoken of plans to actively work on a central fund to cover its researchers open access publication costs.

For more information on how a library goes about setting up a central fund, view our case studies page that now includes the recently added Max Planck Society case study.

Is your institution in the process of adopting an open access policy? Why not share your thoughts and experiences with us?
