Temporal stability in the genetic structure of Sarcoptes scabiei under the host-taxon law: empirical evidences from wildlife-derived Sarcoptes mite in Asturias, Spain

Samer Alasaad, Álvaro Oleaga, Rosa Casais, Luca Rossi, Annarita Min, Ramón C Soriguer, Christian Gortázar Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:151 (27 July 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

This study examines the extent of changes in the genetic diversity of Sarcoptes scabiei over time. The use of 9 microsatellite markers on mite populations derived from sympatric wild species in Asturias (Spain) revealed temporal stability in genetic structure under the host-taxon law. Leishmania infantum HSP70-II null mutant as candidate vaccine against leishmaniasis: a preliminary evaluation

Javier Carrión, Cristina Folgueira, Manuel Soto, Manuel Fresno, Jose M Requena Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:150 (27 July 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

This study describes the ability of a Leishmania infantum deletion mutant, lacking both HSP70-II alleles (ΔHSP70-II), to provide protection against L. major in the BALB/c infection model. Furthermore, ΔHSP70-II could be a safe live vaccine as administration to SCID mice and hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) did not develop any sign of pathology. Image:Pre-inoculation of mice with ΔHSP70-II promastigotes prevented footpad lesion development after a challenge with virulent L. major.

Speciation in little: the role of range and body size in the diversification of Malagasy mantellid frogs

Katharina C Wollenberg, David R Vieites, Frank Glaw, Miguel Vences BMC Evolutionary Biology 2011, 11:217 (21 July 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The small body size of members of the Mantellidae frog family results in limited dispersal capabilities and low physiological tolerances causing smaller, more fragmented ranges which facilitates reproductive isolation and may favor speciation.
